The sumitake medaka are a popular strain from Japan because of their unique variety of the eye catching blue and green exterior light, and their clear fins with blackish pigmentation. Sumitake is the Main breed which can come in many varieties, Bobu is one of the varietys of Sumitake, some Sumitake can have Golden fins. “Sumitake” (墨武) roughly translates to Ink Warrior, which reflects the bold, dark coloration often seen in this strain. de “Hikarimono” traits (光もの), which give the fish that shimmering, signature external light.

The medaka rice fish or Oryzias latipes is a small fish originating from Japan and south East Asia, which maxes out at 1/1.5 inches. They are great for aquariums and outdoor mini ponds alike . They can eat anything from flakes and pellets to vegetation and mosqutio larvae. They like to be kept in groups, with a minimum of 6 indivduals. A water volume of at least 10 gallons is necessary since they have a relatively high bio-load for a fish of their size. They do best in a temperature of 50-75 degrees Fahrenheit , but can survive in 35-95 degrees Fahrenheit.
